Entry Fee Disclaimer

It was in the spirit of our motto “Do well with nothing, do better with little, and do it now!” to thrive to be a short film community where money isn’t part of the equation. We’ve had the chance to have free monthly screenings for years, meaning directors, cast and crew all got equal access to seeing the result of their collective work on the big screen.

Why the fees?

With venue hire fees now applying, we’ve had to become a ticketed event. We wished we could offer free entry to the filmmakers but also think of the cast and crew, reminisce about how they should all come see the result of their hard work for free too and came to the conclusion that implementing a flat entry fee for everyone was the way to preserve the same ethos. A bit of an all-or-nothing scenario. There are also other factors:

  • It’s a numbers game. Some screenings featured the short works of over 18 filmmakers and 18 free spots break our sustainability. We’re a non-for-profit so we don’t want profits, but we do want to be sustainable for ourselves and the venue.
  • The open-screen format means that the person at the door doesn’t really know who will be screening a film. “I’ve got a film” would become an automatic free entry without the ability to follow through with the projectionist.

What about the filmmakers?

Producers and directors make an essential contribution to the event by screening their short films but are asked to contribute to the sustainability of the group on the same level as their cast and crew. We’re filmmakers too. We get it, and we love being pampered in a festival VIP area, with festival passes and complimentary tickets. With the current entry fee at the door you’re contributing to a registered Not-for-profit organisation, with more assurance that your film will be screened than any of the festivals out there that can have submission fees upwards of $40. We hope you understand and renew your support.

Cheers. The Filmonik Team.
