Filmonik Melbourne is an open filmmaking group in Melbourne, established in 2013. Filmonik is a strickly, non-competitive platform for both experienced filmmakers and those just finding their feet as visual storytellers. Filmonik Melbourne is a registered cultural Charity/Not-for-Profit for the benefit of Victorian filmmakers, casts and crews. It is part of the worldwide Kino Movement, now autonomously active in more than 100 chapters in the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia. The binding philosophy is the belief in filmmaking with minimum resources, in an inclusive, collaborative environment.

Filmonik Melbourne is more than just a group of filmmakers, it’s a community – a not-for-profit organisation, nestling in the creative heart of Melbourne. Filmonik’s mission is to ignite and foster a passion for filmmaking in everyone who joins, regardless of their level of experience or background.

Filmonik began as a dream to create a space where creativity would be unlimited and collaboration the heartbeat of every project. It was inspired by the global Kino Movement, which champions the spirit of spontaneous and collaborative filmmaking. Filmonik is its Melbourne-based chapter and our community is proud to be part of this enthusiastic network. The Kino Movement started in Montreal, Canada in 1999 and has become a worldwide phenomenon, encouraging filmmakers to create with collaboration, immediacy, resourcefulness and a sense of adventure.

As a chapter of this influential social movement, Filmonik Melbourne embraces the Kino ethos of “Do well with nothing. Do better with little. But do it now!” This philosophy drives our community to push the boundaries of conventional filmmaking, by fostering an environment where creativity is unrestrained and immediate realisation of ideas is encouraged. Founded by a group of film enthusiasts, Filmonik has grown into a thriving hub where unique stories are brought to life by nurturing ideas, sharing and refining skills and above all, inclusion and collaboration. Our journey is one of continuous learning, unconstrained creativity and an unwavering commitment to the art of film.

Filmonik organises regular events, workshops and film screenings that are open to all comers. We provide a platform for budding filmmakers to showcase their work, network with peers, and gain valuable feedback. From scriptwriting to post-production, our members have the opportunity to delve into every aspect of filmmaking, guided by the expertise and support of our experienced team and community members.
