How to screen

In true open-mic style there is no pre-selection and no precise lineup announced before the event. Filmmakers can register in advance online to secure a spot up to 24 hours before the screening or show up unannounced with their new film on a USB drive up to 15 minutes before the start of the screening (terms and conditions apply). The screening order is random and filmmakers take the stage after their film for a small QA.

The nitty gritty

Filmonik is a platform for short films:

  • With a duration of 5 minutes or less.
  • Open to all genres but primarily focusing on narrative fiction filmmakers.

Specs:

  • Ideal: 1920×1080 .MP4 files at a high bitrate of around 20Mbps (20,000Kbps).
  • Minimum: 1280×720 .MP4 files at a bitrate of around 3Mbps (3,000Kbps).
  • Too high: No need for 4K files due to a 1080p projector and being heavier to transfer and to play.

File delivery options:

  • More than 24 hours in advance via the Film Submission page and file upload.
  • More than 24 hours in advance via a message to [email protected] and the link to your screening file using the file transfer service of your choice (Google Drive, Wetransfer, Dropbox, etc..)
  • On a USB drive on the night of the screening up to 15 minutes before the start of the screening.

Filmonik likes best:

  • Fresh new films shown as a premiere. You can introduce yourself to Filmonik with your back catalog but after that the goal is to make new films. You can also test a film in front of an unsuspecting audience before finalising it for a premiere in another festival.
  • Short films with the Filmonik logo at the beginning or end or the Filmonik screening number. Download the logo here
  • Self sustaining stories i.e.not episodic content like web series.
  • Films created in a non-competitive environment unlike films with creative restrictions made for a contest with cash prizes or done as a school assignment.

Filmonik is not a platform for:

  • Commercial / paid work or ads.
  • Copyrighted material video mashups or videoclips.
  • Explicit nudity is tolerated with proof of age but hateful, extreme or propaganda material is banned.

Filmonik’s cultural statement:

Filmonik has the mission to support and nurture narrative fiction filmmakers. Some categories of videos are submitted and accepted at Filmonik as long as they’re not over-represented against narrative fiction. When film submissions are aplenty and the screening risks running out of time Filmonik reserves the right to automatically bump to another month videos falling under these categories:

  • Films from 5 minutes to 8 minutes.
  • Demo reels (editor, actor).
  • Feature film trailers over 1 minute.
  • Interviews, tutorials, tourism, live event coverage, live music or theater clips or any variation of what could be considered social media content.
  • Music videos without a strong narrative.

In doubt, submit your film in advance.
